The renovation project of Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport won the 2017 Green Solution Award at the conference of the parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Bonn, Germany from Nov 6 to 17.
The airport has stuck to the principle of building a green airport in its construction, renovation and operations in recent years, leading to a constant conservation of energy and reduction of energy costs.
Introducing clean and low-carbon energy projects
The T2 terminal of the airport is an important part of the integrated transportation hub in Hongqiao Central Business District. It is also the major energy consumer. The airport consequently started its renovations by lowering its energy consumption.
Take the lighting systems for example. The airport has replaced the more than 38,000 traditional bulbs with energy-saving, pro-environment LED ones that offer long life span and low maintenance requirements, saving 5.7 million kilowatt hours for the airport every year.
Solar water heating systems have been used in the energy center, dining halls and some of the offices, and new energy vehicles are widely used at the airport where nearly 300 charging piles have been erected.
