At the beginning of this year, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology lifted the restriction that prohibited airborne satellite equipment to be turned on until a plane is above 3,000 meters in altitude, thus allowing passengers to use Wi-Fi services throughout the journey.
To date, planes operated by several Chinese airlines like China Eastern Airlines and Air China are equipped with Wi-Fi capabilities, and this was made possible by the help of a major industry player like Air Ground Internet Technology, a company based in Shanghai's Hongqiao Linkong Economic Park.
Presently, aircrafts equipped with the company's onboard Wi-Fi technology make up 50 percent of the national total.
