In a significant move towards urban renewal, Shanghai is undergoing a transformation under the guidance of the government's new work report.

Wang Ying, a member of the 16th Shanghai People's Congress, expresses her enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the need for innovative concepts and methods in urban development.

"Urban renewal is crucial for the high-quality development of our cities," says Wang. "In Shanghai, we are tailoring our approaches to match the unique characteristics and locations of each project, leading the way in national urban development."

The focus has shifted from large-scale demolition to complex integration projects that protect neighborhood character, transform old industrial areas, and enhance public spaces.

The recently completed Panlong Tiandi project exemplifies this new approach. Transforming the "village within the city" into a vibrant hub that has attracted approximately 16 million visitors since its launch in April 2023.

Wang highlights the project's success in blending historical elements with modern living, a practice that has turned Panlong Ancient Town into a cultural and business tourism hotspot. The project's success, she believes, is linked to the 230,000 square meters of green space.

The ongoing renovation of Zhaojialou Ancient Town follows a similar philosophy, aiming to create a new cultural and tourist landmark that honors the historical charm of the Jiangnan region as well as Shanghai's cultural essence.

Wang has proposed the further optimization of urban renewal work in Shanghai. This proposal was presented at the Shanghai People's Congress, and outlines the importance of addressing challenges in urban renewal.

Wang advocates for a balance between green development and historical preservation, stressing the importance of diverse solutions to enhance living environments, improve city appearance, and promote high-quality economic and social development.

Through these efforts, Shanghai is not just renewing its urban landscape but also redefining the concept of what is a livable city. Shanghai is making strides towards sustainable economic recovery and a brighter future for its citizens.
