German sports carmaker Porsche launched its first research and development (R&D) center outside Germany in the Shanghai Hongqiao International Central Business District on Nov 5, when the company was participating in the eighth China International Import Expo.
The Shanghai R&D center is a key part of Porsche's "In China, for China" strategy, aimed at creating products specifically for the Chinese market. It handles local R&D, digital engineering, procurement, and quality assurance, with focuses on smart connectivity, new energy solutions, and developing products tailored to the Chinese market. Porsche plans to introduce its first China-exclusive infotainment system by 2026.
Oliver Blume, chairman of the executive board of Porsche AG, emphasized the importance of being in China to keep up with recent trends in electrification, digitalization, and luxury. "China is leading the future of mobility," Blume said. "Our new R&D center is crucial for connecting German engineering with China's digital advancements, allowing us to learn quickly and enhance our global capabilities."
Michael Steiner, Porsche AG's head of R&D, highlighted the benefits of the new center. "Being in China allows us to tap into the country's fast-paced innovation," Steiner said. "This has cut our development time from years to months, helping us better meet the needs of our Chinese customers."
