A burgeoning biomedicine and health industry cluster, with a targeted output value exceeding 100 billion yuan ($13.68 billion), is rapidly developing in the Qianwan area of the Hongqiao International Central Business District (CBD).
Due to the local government's meticulous planning with regard to investment promotion and comprehensive services, the area has attracted many companies and major projects.
The New Hongqiao International Medical Center is also located in the Qianwan area, supporting clinical research for medical companies. This center is a cornerstone of the area's biomedicine and health industry, offering extensive resources and infrastructure to foster innovation and growth.
Among the notable enterprises in Qianwan is Innovent Biologics, with its global R&D center located in the area. Innovent is set to launch its highly anticipated new drug, Mazdutide, next year. This innovative medication, often referred to as the "Chinese version of Semaglutide", has already sparked widespread discussion and excitement within the industry.
"Positioning our global R&D center in Qianwan is a solid step in our globalization strategy," said Qian Lei, senior vice-president of clinical development at Innovent Biologics.
To date, Innovent Biologics has 11 approved products on the market, making it one of the leading domestic companies in terms of listed monoclonal antibody drugs. The company first visited Qianwan in 2018, when they had yet to launch any products officially.

The area now hosts several major biomedicine facilities, including the Yunnan Baiyao Shanghai International Center and Wego (Shanghai) International Research Institute. These facilities, along with others like Simcere Pharmaceutical, contribute to a high-quality biomedicine and health ecosystem in Qianwan.
Shen Chunmei, deputy director of the Investment Promotion Office of Huacao town, expressed her excitement about the future: "Our New Hongqiao International Medical Center is surrounded by biomedicine companies. This unique biomedicine ecosystem in Qianwan is invaluable. In a couple of years, the area will be bustling with operational enterprises."
To ensure seamless integration and support for these enterprises, a dedicated service team has been established. Hou Jia, head of the Party and Mass Center of Huacao town, highlighted their proactive approach. "We anticipate and address potential needs of enterprises before they even move in. Each company has a dedicated coordinator, ensuring prompt and efficient services," Hou said.
In a recent talent service event, six companies, including Innovent Biologics, were designated as "Qianwan Talent Ambassadors". These companies are not only attracting talent for themselves but also contributing to the overall talent pool in Qianwan.
