The Huacao International Community Center in Shanghai recently welcomed 15 foreign families for an immersive dive into Chinese culture.
Participants in special dress enjoyed a full sensory experience, with activities highlighting traditional Chinese attire and crafts. German sisters Josephine and Phyllis charmed in traditional dresses, while Russian participant Rafaella Renninger impressed with her floral-themed ensemble. Adults Kristine Renninger and Inga Spies showcased unique interpretations of Eastern fashion.
Interactive activities included imprinting canvas bags with botanical designs and painting traditional Chinese kites with auspicious symbols like loongs and flowers. Families also crafted Chinese pastries, using fragrant osmanthus and mung bean fillings.
Huacao town, home to a diverse community of over 9,600 expatriates from nearly 80 countries, regularly hosts events to promote cultural exchange.
Initiatives like Celebrating Chinese Festivals with Foreign Friends during traditional holidays encourage expats to engage with local culture. A town representative emphasized the importance of these events in enhancing friendships, noting plans to involve both foreign and Chinese families in more traditional crafts and culinary activities.
