German luxury automaker Porsche recently announced at the ongoing Auto Shanghai 2025 that the first phrase of its newly-built China Research and Development (R&D) Center, located in the Jiading area of the Hongqiao International Central Business District, is set to begin operations in the second half of this year.
The 10,000-square-meter center will integrate Porsche R&D China, Porsche Digital Technology China, and Porsche Engineering China. It marks a significant upgrade in Porsche's approach to local R&D, procurement, and quality assurance, promising enhanced local R&D capabilities to better align with regional market demands.
Key focuses of the center include developing infotainment systems and driver-assistance solutions tailored to Chinese consumers. The first custom infotainment solution is expected to debut in Porsche models by 2026.
"We want to combine cutting-edge intelligent technology that really understands driving and user needs into our products. While meeting the demands of Chinese customers, we are committed to preserving Porsche's unique driving experience. Our goal is to set an example of 'Chinese technology + driving experience' integration," said Li Nan, vice-president of Porsche China's Technical Department.
Located near the Shanghai Hongqiao Transportation Hub, the facility will feature specialized workshops and a human-machine interaction (HMI) laboratory to enhance development speed and efficiency.
The center will attract and cultivate high-level engineers and digital experts. Its first phase can accommodate over 300 engineers. It will promote cross-departmental collaboration to accelerate decision-making processes. Additionally, the R&D center has a branch in Beijing to further support local R&D and enhance regional collaboration efficiency.
