Shanghai honors foreign-funded R&D centers in Hongqiao CBD

Shanghai certified 30 new regional headquarters of multinational corporations and 15 research and development centers during a ceremony held on July 11.

Among those recognized were Swisslog Healthcare (Shanghai) and Wells Advanced Materials (Shanghai), both located in the Hongqiao International Central Business District of the city.

Swisslog Healthcare, a Swiss company with over 120 years of history, is renowned for its advanced logistics and pharmacy automation solutions for hospitals.

Since establishing its presence in Hongqiao in 2021, the company has been integrating its expertise in automation and smart technology to provide efficient, accurate and reliable logistics and pharmacy automation solutions for hospitals.

After receiving the certification, the group said that it was motivated to boost local innovation and expand smart healthcare solutions.

The company said it was optimistic about creating more value in Hongqiao by using advanced technology to support the regional healthcare industry.

Wells Advanced Materials specializes in modified epoxy resins, focusing on innovations in wind turbine blades and electronic insulation materials. Since launching its R&D headquarters in 2021, the company has seen significant growth, culminating in a successful listing on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 2023.

Shen Fei, deputy general manager of Wells Advanced Materials (Shanghai), said his group was honored to receive the certification and stated that it would encourage it to boost its innovation and contribute to wider regional economic growth.

After nearly 15 years in Hongqiao, the company has thrived and is optimistic about the future. Shen highlighted the benefits of Hongqiao's transportation and resources and is looking forward to collaborating with other companies, supported by district policies, to explore the market and shape the future.

From January to May, the Hongqiao International Central Business District welcomed 114 new foreign-funded enterprises, bringing the total to 5,081.

During the period, the total amount of actual foreign investment shot up by 38.5 percent year-on-year. Cumulatively, the business district has introduced 48 regional headquarters of multinational companies and 14 foreign-funded R&D centers.
