Egyptian energy and infrastructure group Elsewedy Electric has established its first wholly owned subsidiary in China in Shanghai's Hongqiao International Central Business District, creating a new base for procurement and supply chain development, the company said on Sept 15.
Based in Minhang district, Elsewedy Electric (Shanghai) Co Ltd will identify and assess Chinese suppliers, build long-term partnerships and help Chinese power equipment and new energy technologies reach markets in the Middle East and Africa. It will also explore energy project cooperation and industrial park development.
Founded in Cairo in 1938, Elsewedy Electric operates in 60 countries across six business areas, including cables, electrical products, engineering and construction, digital solutions and infrastructure investments.
Group President and CEO Ahmed Elsewedy said China is central to the company's global strategy, both as a manufacturing powerhouse and a source of long-term cooperation and innovation. Establishing a local presence will help deepen partnerships and tap new market opportunities, he said.
The company selected Hongqiao after comparing several Shanghai districts. Its integrated transport links provide convenient access to supplier factories across the Yangtze River Delta region and to international travel, with Hongqiao International Airport and Hongqiao Railway Station about a 10-minute drive away.
The area also offers policy support for trade and cross-border settlement, a cluster of foreign trade and energy companies, and access to local universities and research institutes for talent recruitment.
Sherif Elaish, the group's general manager for China, said the company aims to establish long-term roots in Hongqiao, integrate into the local industrial ecosystem and strengthen industrial and trade cooperation between China and Egypt.
