Shanghai Metals Market (SMM), a leading service portal for the non-ferrous metal industry, is actively promoting industrial development in Southeast Africa.
SMM offers benchmark prices, analysis, consulting, and exhibition services for a wide range of metal products, including basic metals, iron ore, and precious metals. Its daily spot prices, known as SMM prices, are recognized benchmarks certified by the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO).
Partnerships and New Indices

SMM has partnered with the Indonesian Nickel Miners Association (APNI) to launch the Indonesian Nickel Ore FOB Index and the Indonesian Ferronickel FOB Index. These indices have become crucial for Chinese-funded smelters in Indonesia importing nickel ore from the Philippines. In October 2024, these indices were adopted as reference benchmarks for the Indonesian government's nickel ore guideline price (HPM), marking a significant collaboration between Indonesia and China.
SMM is also discussing with APNI and the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Ministry of Mines about the potential release of cobalt prices, aiming to replicate its successful nickel pricing model. Additionally, SMM is collaborating with the Jakarta Futures Exchange and the Yunnan Tin Group to research and release an Asian tin industry index. To further support industry needs, SMM plans to establish offices in Southeast Asia, hiring local experts to develop a regional pricing system.
Conferences and Industry Exchange

In June 2024, SMM organized major conferences in Thailand and Malaysia, focusing on the automotive supply chain and recycled metals industry. These events attracted government officials, international organizations, and industry leaders, providing a platform for knowledge exchange and business opportunities.
In 2025, SMM will expand its conference activities, hosting the Indonesia Mining Conference and Critical Metals Conference, which will focus on sectors like nickel-cobalt new energy, coal, tin, and aluminum, with over 1,600 people from 45 countries expected to participate.
Overseas Inspection Tours
To address challenges in raw material supply and environmental regulations, SMM organizes overseas inspection tours. These tours help enterprises explore stable raw material sources and understand local market conditions. With demand for Vietnam's lead resources growing, SMM is increasing investment in inspection routes to offer more opportunities for industry stakeholders to reduce costs and risks.
