Shopping malls in Shanghai's Hongqiao International Central Business District recorded strong sales and increased foot traffic during the National Day holiday, driven by themed events ranging from an international pizza festival to art performances.
Hongqiao Qianwan Incity Mega in Minhang district recorded sales of 88.86 million yuan ($13.22 million) from Sept 25 to Oct 7, up 25 percent from a comparable period in late August and early September. Foot traffic reached 815,000, up 43 percent.
The mall hosted Shanghai's first international pizza festival. The event featured more than 30 international food brands, nearly 10 time-honored Shanghai food brands and over 40 specialty food and cultural-creative vendors. Highlights included a 100-meter-long pizza display, free tastings, a dough-rolling session, jazz performances, and roaming pizza-themed performers.
Nearby, Longfor Hongqiao Paradise Walk hosted a Minhang sub-venue of the Shanghai International Light Festival, featuring an immersive light show in a park-like setting. The mall's sales rose 14.78 percent year-on-year during the holiday period.
At Hongqiao Xintiandi, the 2026 Xintiandi Art Tour Season presented 25 performances over 11 days, spanning the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday.
The strong performance reflects the appeal of experience-driven consumption. Building on its role as a gateway to the Yangtze River Delta region, the district will continue to optimize its commercial layout, diversify consumer offerings, and develop more immersive retail experiences.
