BilibiliWorld (BW) 2026, Asia's biggest ACGN (animation, comics, games, and novels) expo, transformed Shanghai into a hub for anime and gaming enthusiasts worldwide last weekend.
Hosted annually by the Chinese video-sharing platform Bilibili, BW has evolved into a multi-entertainment convention and carnival. It delivers immersive experiences covering live stage performances, themed showcases, and hands-on interactive installations.
Held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai) in the Shanghai Hongqiao International Central Business District from July 10 to 12, the three-day convention spanned 240,000 square meters across eight exhibition halls. It welcomed more than 170 exhibitors and 60,000 cosplayers, drawing more than 400,000 attendees.
BW opened overseas ticket sales for the first time this year, making tickets available in more than 190 countries and regions. Tickets purchased with passports accounted for a record 18 percent of all ticket sales, reflecting the event's growing international appeal.
Among the highlights was Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige's first appearance at a comic convention in China, where he unveiled exclusive previews of Avengers: Doomsday. Visitors also enjoyed virtual streamer showcases, artist markets, e-sports tournaments, model competitions, and meet-and-greet sessions with creators and voice actors.
The event also boosted Shanghai's summer economy. Overseas flight bookings to the city rose 35 percent year on year during the convention, while hotel bookings increased 126 percent. Hotels within five kilometers of the venue saw bookings surge by 600 percent.
