Shanghai's two airports recorded unprecedented flight and passenger volumes during the 62-day summer travel season, according to Shanghai Airport (Group) Co Ltd.

From July 1 to Aug 31, Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport handled a combined total of 147,000 flights, up 3 percent from last year. Pudong accounted for 99,000 flights and Hongqiao 48,000.

Passenger traffic reached 24.18 million, averaging 390,000 travelers per day, up 5 percent year-on-year. Of the total, 15.48 million passengers traveled through Pudong and 8.70 million through Hongqiao.

To meet rising demand from a diverse traveler base, the airports introduced new measures to enhance efficiency and convenience. Pudong added seven self-service check-in and baggage drop kiosks, while Hongqiao launched passenger-flow-based security check lanes.

Nearly 60 integrated information screens were also installed at ride-hailing pick-up points and driver waiting areas, providing real-time updates on ride requests and vehicle locations.

Since 2025, the city has expanded its global air network with new intercontinental routes to Belgrade, Casablanca, and Geneva, along with additional Asian destinations such as Japan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Mongolia.
